Sugar Valley Energy Bio-refinery to Address Sustainable Aviation Fuel Market

Sugar Valley Energy, a new 160-acre bioenergy campus planned in California’s Imperial Valley, will produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel for the airline industry, announced California Ethanol + Power CEO and President David Rubenstein today. The project could produce up to 77 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) annually and possibly up to 140 MGY when using agricultural biproducts.

Brawley, CA (July 11, 2023) — California Ethanol + Power (CE+P) today announced that leading environmental consulting experts Life Cycle Associates has joined its team for Sugar Valley Energy, a sugarcane-to-ethanol biorefinery planned in California’s Imperial Valley. Life Cycle Associates is partnering with CE+P to define the expected carbon intensity pathway for the sugarcane ethanol product as called for by California’s low carbon fuel standard (LCFS.)

Sugar Valley Energy will help bring employment opportunities to Imperial County

BRAWLEY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Sugar Valley Energy is a low-carbon sugarcane-to-ethanol and power facility that will help local Imperial Valley growers with profitable and sustainable long-term crops. The facility is expected to be up and running by 2026. It is also expected to employ over 200 on-site employees to help run the energy campus and an estimated 2,000 agricultural jobs. Sugar Valley Energy CEO Dave Rubenstein said that test crops are already thriving in the region and have been growing for over a decade.

California Ethanol & Power is looking to raise USD 100m to USD 150m in equity for its wholly-owned subsidiary Sugar Valley Energy, co-founder, CEO, and President David R. Rubenstein said. Strategic players interested in acquiring ethanol or biogas produced by the plant as well as private equity funds would be attractive investors, Rubenstein said.

Sugarcane cultivation will boost Imperial County’s energy boom

With the $1 billion investment planned for the Sugar Valley Energy project, we are enthusiastic about the prospect of growing sugarcane. The crop will be used to produce low-carbon ethanol for a variety of uses including more sustainable transportation fuel. Besides ethanol, the project will also produce bioelectricity and pipeline-grade biogas. At Benson Farms, we have grown sugarcane for almost a decade and found it uses approximately the same amount of water as forage crops. Our local farming community can be counted on to innovate and adapt to future water conservation goals, and we have proven that sugarcane can thrive in the Valley.
