The developer of a long-awaited ethanol plant in Imperial County said he is now seeking a reliable supply of sugarcane. California Ethanol + Power Chief Executive Officer David Rubinstein said Monday it is seeking formal commitments from local farmers to grow the first 20,000 acres of sugarcane feedstock for Sugar Valley Energy, the new 160-acre energy campus planned within the 5,000-acre Keystone Industrial Complex near Brawley.

Sugar Valley Energy project pens 15-year contract with Midwest powerhouse CHS Inc.

IMPERIAL VALLEY — The growth of the sugarcane plant which California Ethanol & Power, LLC have been working on getting up and running since 2013 in Imperial County, recently took a major step forward. California Ethanol + Power (CE+P) announced an exclusive 15-year contract was awarded to CHS Inc. to market and sell the 68-million gallons of “Essential Ethanol” to be produced annually by the local Sugar Valley Energy campus, slated to be located at 136 E. Keystone Road between Highway 111 and Dogwood Road in Brawley, according to a December press release. Sugar Valley Energy will be a 160-acre, multi-plant campus consisting of sugarcane-to-ethanol, sugarcane to low-carbon power plus biomethane, and wastewater treatment facilities, according to the release.

Such is the case with the Sugar Valley Energy project, a billion-dollar biofuel and energy complex being developed in our own Imperial County by California Ethanol + Power. This energy campus will manufacture ethanol from locally-grown sugarcane and produce 49 megawatts of alternative electrical power for the regional grid, as well as bio-methane (renewable natural gas.)

Long-awaited CEP project gets a name and a builder

An Imperial Valley renewable energy project that has been years in the making may finally break ground by early next year, according to its founder. California Ethanol + Power president and CEO David Rubenstein said Tuesday he expected to have the $950 million in financing needed for the project by late August, and he estimated groundbreaking could take later this year or early next.
